Artist Statement
The domain of the arts is the domain of paradox. It unites what appear on the surface to be oppositional; its inhabitants are all that exist.
An artist’s assignment is to make this residency, this hidden inherited right of belonging knowable, to give form to the invisible, give sound to the inaudible; to provoke, not through confrontation but gentle stimulation, our senses beyond the conventional rules and barriers of forms and appearances -not to deny our immediate reality but to reconcile the different dimensions of our living experience, to make the mysterious order of things - even if only temporarily - graspable by our senses, through what we quaintly call “beauty”.

Bio
Artello is Judi Chan and Keith-yin Sun, explorers of the realms of forms and the formless. Through thoughtfully articulated visual devices, Artello navigates the thread that weaves together the tangible and the abstract, telling stories beyond the narratives.
Keith’s began his creative career in the 1990s in design while maintaining his fine arts practice particularly in drawing, painting and sculpture. He formed design studio Vanguard Works in 2003 and co-founded Artello with Judi in 2010 to further engage the different areas of their shared interest in a unified manner. While his personal works possess a modernist fluidity, his work as Artello with Judi represents a more thoughtful and considered constructed approach to expressing intuitive concepts and abstract ideas.
Judi’s ability to express internal experiences through imaginative and abstract expressions was recognised when her artwork was chosen in Shift Japan's International competition in 2004. Her graduation project was an attempt to amalgamate her love for children’s literature and the deeper and more complex side of human emotions in illustration as art. She moved to Edmonton from New Zealand in 2006 after receiving her B.F.A. from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, Auckland and formed Artello with Keith in 2010.
Their deep interest in the exploration of the universal harmony that lies within all domains of creative expressions has led them to their uniquely personal and highly methodical approach that is conceptual and craft based.
